Digital load cells utilize the same strain gauge elements as traditional load cells, but add electronics to process the strain information and output as a 0-5V digital signal (RS485) rather than as a low millivolt bridge output. Digital load cells also internally correct for temperature changes and allow storage of calibration adjustments. While these load cells may be more robust, because they are exposed to the same threats as the traditional load cells, surge protection is still required. As additional circuit resistance can be added to the digital output circuit without affecting calibration, high capacity industrial SPDs can be used. Similar protection concepts are required where protection is installed at each load cell and at the measuring equipment.
